First tools for drilling in stone: drills - made of flint, animal bones, and even wood. Drilling holes in the stone using such "drills" was possible because of pouring some sharp granules of sand tightened to the drilling material by the rotating peg, e.g. wood peg. This peg cuts out the desirable hole.
